Perfume decants: what they are and how to buy them

A decant is perfume poured from a full bottle into a small vial. It lets you live with a scent for days or weeks before you commit to a full bottle. The catch: you rely on the person who poured it.

1. What a decant is

A decant is perfume transferred, or "decanted", from an original full bottle into a smaller atomiser or vial. Collectors and shops make them to share or sell part of a bottle.

Because the full bottle has to be opened, a decant comes without the brand's packaging and without a factory seal. Its label is written by whoever filled it.

2. Decant, sample, tester, miniature: the difference

• Decant: filled by a person or a shop from a full bottle, in whatever size they offer.
• Sample: a small vial filled and sealed by the brand itself, often handed out in stores or added to an order.
• Tester: a full bottle the brand supplies to shops so customers can try the scent. Our guide on telling original from fake explains testers in more detail.
• Miniature: a small bottle filled at the factory and sold by the brand, often in gift sets.

3. Why collectors use decants

• Try before you buy: a paper strip in a shop tells you little. A decant lets you wear a scent on your skin for several days, in different weather and moods.
• Travel: a small atomiser is lighter and easier to carry than a full bottle.
• Rotation: more variety without a shelf of full bottles you rarely use.
• Rare and discontinued scents: when a full bottle is hard to find, a decant may be the only realistic way to try it.

4. Is a decant original? It depends on the source bottle

A genuine decant is the same perfume as its source bottle. You can't check it the way you check a sealed bottle, because there is no box, no cellophane and no batch code on the vial. So you rely on the seller.

• Ask which bottle the decant was poured from, and ask for a photo of that bottle with its batch code. Our guide explains what batch codes can and can't tell you.
• Prefer sellers with reviews and a track record over anonymous one-off listings.
• Be careful with prices far below what the same amount from a full bottle would cost.

5. Sizes and atomisers

• Sizes: decants usually come in small sizes, from a couple of millilitres for a first impression up to around ten for longer wear.
• Glass or plastic: glass atomisers are the usual choice. Some plastics can react with perfume over time.
• Spray or dab: a spray atomiser lets you wear the scent like the full bottle. A dab vial is enough for a first test on skin.
• Label: a good decant names the house, the perfume and its concentration, for example Eau de Parfum.

6. Storing decants in UAE heat

• Heat, light and air change perfume over time. Keep decants in a cool, dark drawer or cupboard, away from windows.
• Never leave perfume in a parked car in the UAE summer.
• Keep vials closed and upright, and label each one with the perfume's name and the date you got it.
