How to buy used perfume safely
A pre-owned bottle can be a smart way to own a scent you love, or to find one that's no longer made. The risks are real but manageable: a fake, a bottle damaged by heat, or a seller who disappears.
This checklist covers what to ask, what to look at and how to pay.
1. Is buying used perfume worth it?
Often, yes. Used bottles usually cost less than new ones, partly used bottles let you own a scent without paying for a full one, and discontinued perfumes are sometimes only available second-hand.
The risks are just as real: counterfeits, genuine bottles refilled with something else, perfume damaged by heat, a fill level lower than described, or a seller who takes the money and disappears. The steps below address each of them.
2. Questions to ask before you pay
- Where and when did you buy it? Do you still have the receipt?
- How much is left, in ml or as a percentage?
- How has it been stored?
- Has the sprayer or the cap ever been replaced?
- Can you send a photo of the batch code on the bottle and on the box?
Honest sellers usually answer quickly and in detail. Vague or evasive answers are a reason to move on.
3. Photos to ask for
- Front, back and base of the bottle, with the batch code readable.
- The fill level against the light.
- The sprayer, the cap and the box with its code.
- A photo of the bottle next to a note with today's date. It shows the seller actually has it.
Our guide on telling original from fake explains what to look for in these photos.
4. Heat, light and age: judging condition in the UAE
- Heat and sunlight can change perfume over time, especially its fresh opening. Ask how the bottle was stored, and be careful with bottles kept in a car, a bathroom or on a sunny shelf.
- In summer, think about delivery too: a parcel left for hours in a hot vehicle or at a sunny door can harm the perfume.
- A slightly darker colour can come from normal ageing and doesn't prove damage on its own. A sour or flat smell is the better clue.
5. Testers, unboxed and partly used bottles
- Testers are original perfume that brands supply to shops. Their packaging is easy to copy, so check the bottle, the codes and the seller. In PERFUMI's Souk, testers must be listed as testers.
- Unboxed bottles leave out the box checks, so the codes on the bottle and the seller's history matter more.
- Partly used bottles: compare the fill level in the photos with the description, and ask again if they don't match.
6. When a deal is too good to be true
- A new, sealed bottle far below the usual price.
- A seller who pushes you to pay quickly, or refuses to meet or send extra photos.
- Requests to pay a deposit, a third party or with gift cards.
- A brand-new account with no reviews selling several popular bottles at once.
7. Meeting, paying and delivery
- If you can, meet in a busy public place and look at the bottle before you pay.
- Avoid paying in advance to someone you don't know.
- For a delivery, agree in writing what happens if the bottle doesn't match the listing.
- Keep the listing and all messages until you are happy with the bottle.
For ordinary listings in PERFUMI's Souk, buyer and seller agree on payment and delivery directly with each other. You can report a listing or a member and block them in the app.
8. Trust levels and Fake Check on PERFUMI
Every listing in PERFUMI's Souk shows a trust level built from real evidence, from a confirmed phone number and buyer reviews up to a passed Fake Check. With Fake Check, our experts inspect the bottle and PERFUMI keeps it until it ships to you. Fake Check is optional and only for original bottles, so not every listing has it. Trust levels help you decide; they are not a guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Does heat ruin perfume?
Long exposure to heat and sunlight can change a perfume, especially its fresh opening. Ask how the bottle was stored and avoid bottles kept in cars or sunny windows.
Are used testers original?
Genuine testers are original perfume. Tester packaging is copied too, so check the bottle, the codes and the seller.
What should I do if the bottle isn't what was listed?
Keep the listing, the messages and photos of what you received, and contact the seller first. On PERFUMI you can also report the listing or the member. If you think the bottle is counterfeit, you can contact the consumer protection authority in your emirate.
Does PERFUMI handle payment for Souk listings?
For ordinary listings, buyer and seller agree on payment and delivery directly. With Fake Check, PERFUMI keeps the inspected bottle and ships it to the buyer.
